Liability for Queens Hit-and-Run Truck Accidents
Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed in hit-and-run accidents each year. According to the NHTSA, “Twenty-five percent of pedestrian deaths in 2022 occurred in hit-and-run crashes. Between 2013 and 2019, hit-and-run crashes accounted for about 20% of pedestrian fatalities. This number jumped to 24% in 2020, and it has inched up to 25% since then.” Many different factors could contribute to a hit-and-run crash.
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Inclement weather
- Poor road conditions
Drivers have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles in the roadway. To that end, they must continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a bicyclist or pedestrian, this may be construed as negligence. Victims of car accidents may suffer very serious injuries.
- Fractures
- Organ damage
- Death
- Lacerations
Drivers that leave the scene of injury collisions could face criminal charges in addition to civil liability. It is possible that the police could also be liable for a collision. Police chases are among the most dangerous activities that officers engage in. When a police officer demonstrates a reckless disregard for the safety of the public, the department that they work for could be held at fault.
