NYC Urologist Darius Paduch Sentenced To Life In Prison For Patient Sexual Abuse

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (November 21, 2024) – Disgraced New York City urologist Darius Paduch has been sentenced to life in prison for the sexual abuse of his patients.

The defendant was sentenced on Wednesday after being charged with sexually abusing multiple male patients, including six minors. According to one statement by US Attorney Damian Williams, “Darius Paduch was a sexual predator who preyed on patients seeking treatment for sensitive medical issues.”

Prior to being arrested, Darius Paduch worked for numerous hospitals, including Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University, and Northwell Health Systems.

According to prosecutors, he engaged in numerous forms of abuse, including masturbating his patients and digitally penetrating them without gloves. He has claimed that the instances of abuse were medically necessary examinations.

In addition to the criminal charges, he is also facing 310 civil lawsuits by people who claimed he sexually abused them. Gersowitz Libo & Korek has represented multiple victims in the Dr Darius Paduch lawsuits.

Liability For New York City Doctor Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse among healthcare professionals in the United States remains very common. According to the National Institutes of Health, “A 1998 study identified 567 U.S. physicians who were disciplined by state medical boards from 1981 through 1996 for sex-related offenses (including sexual intercourse, rape, sexual molestation, and sexual favors for drugs), 75% of which involved patients.” A large portion of the abuse that takes place is never reported. Hospitals and other healthcare providers should take a number of measures in order to prevent their patients from being sexually abused.

  • Hospitals should conduct thorough background checks on all staff, including those who work for the hospital temporarily.
  • Hospital staff should be trained on recognizing, reporting, and preventing instances of sexual abuse.
  • Hospitals should develop and enforce clear codes of conduct regarding what constitutes sexual abuse.
  • Hospitals should use enhanced supervision and monitoring, especially for patients who are most at risk.

Hospitals and other healthcare providers have a legal obligation to take reasonable steps in order to prevent sexual abuse. Much of the sexual abuse that takes place in a hospital setting is related to exams that are supposedly medically necessary. Doctors may request that patients undress or touch their private areas under the ruse of a medical exam. Patients often go along with the abuse because they simply don’t know any better and trust their doctor. There are a number of mistakes that a hospital or other healthcare provider may have made that allowed sexual abuse to take place.

  • A hospital may have failed to investigate reported instances of misconduct.
  • A hospital may have failed to perform adequate background checks on doctors or other employees.
  • A hospital may have failed to follow their own policies and procedures designed to prevent abuse.

The vast majority of sexual abuse that takes place in hospital settings is completely preventable. Indeed, by the time any doctor is arrested for sexual abuse, there are often dozens of red flags that are missed. In many cases, hospitals either ignored or outright dismissed allegations that their own patients were making. Any person who is sexually abused by a doctor in New York City may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A sexual abuse attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
