13 Reported Injured In University Heights, Bronx After MTA Bus Crashed Into Subway Pillar

Multiple Injured In MTA Bus Collision By Bronx Subway Station

BRONX, NEW York (October 19, 2024) – At least 13 people were injured in a University Heights, Bronx MTA bus accident by Jerome Avenue and 181st Street.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 3:00 p.m. on Monday. An MTA bus collided with a subway pillar for uncertain reasons.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. A total of 13 people were injured, and several were taken to the hospital.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For MTA Bus Accidents

Many people are injured every year in MTA bus collisions. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Buses can be uniquely dangerous for a number of reasons.

  • Buses tend to have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
  • Buses weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles and take much longer to stop.
  • Buses have a wide turning radius, which can make side-impact collisions more likely.

Bus companies are considered common carriers, and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must do everything in their power in order to avoid collisions. If a bus driver fails to slow down in order to avoid collisions, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There could be numerous sources of liability for any MTA bus collision.

  • The company or municipal entity that hired the bus drivers could be held at fault.
  • A city could be held at fault if an accident was caused by a dangerous condition on public property.
  • A company responsible for maintaining a bus could be held at fault if a bus was poorly maintained.

Bus crashes can be very traumatic for all involved. Accident victims often suffer very serious injuries that may impact their ability to work or go to school. Many of these collisions are entirely preventable. Any person injured in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
