New York City Police Investigating Queens Hit-And-Run Collision That Left Two Moped Riders Dead

Moped Riders Killed In Elmhurst, Queens Hit-And-Run Car Accident

QUEENS, NEW YORK (May 31, 2024) – Two moped riders tragically died in a hit-and-run car accident in Elmhurst, Queens by 57th Avenue.

New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place on Sunday. The driver of a Volkswagen Golf hit two moped riders and then fled the scene of the collision.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims. Two moped riders were taken to the hospital to receive treatment.

Sadly, they both died due to the severe nature of their injuries. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Queens Hit-And-Run Collisions

Hit-and-run collisions remain alarmingly common in the United States. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015 (NHTSA, 2016). This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds. The 2,049 fatalities that resulted from hit-and-run crashes in 2016 were the highest number ever recorded (NHTSA, 2017).” Several factors could contribute to a hit-and-run collision.

  • Driver intoxication
  • Speeding
  • Vehicle system failures
  • Reckless driving

All drivers have a legal obligation to obey traffic regulations and take measures in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. An investigation should be conducted after any hit-and-run collision.

  • Fragments of the fleeing vehicle should be collected.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records related to the death should be sought.
  • The bus driver’s logbook should be examined.

Hit-and-run collisions can be very traumatic for all involved. This is particularly true when someone dies. Evidence can help track down the driver who fled the scene. But it is important that it be collected quickly. The family of any person who died in a collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
