Many Injured During Home Depot Chemical Spill in Freeport

Nassau County Officials Investigating Chemical Spill Accident at The Home Depot in Freeport on East Sunrise Highway

Two People Injured In Staten Island Garbage Truck Accident

FREEPORT, NEW YORK (July 3, 2026) – Over 12 people were exposed to noxious chemicals during their trip to The Home Depot on East Sunrise Highway in Freeport.

Freeport police officials are saying that the incident occurred around 1:44 PM on Wednesday. Customers at the Freeport Home Depot were exposed to some type of chemical reaction that may have included chlorine bleach.

The Home Depot worked to contain the spill. Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Hazardous Materials Response team was called to the scene to identify the chemicals that were mixed.

At least three people required hospitalization due to the chemical exposure incident. It remains unclear how the chemicals became mixed in the first place.

Liability for Freeport Hazmat Incidents

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for the safety of all persons whose presence at the property is reasonably foreseeable. Stores like The Home Depot that utilize such noxious chemicals must take certain measures to prevent chemical spill incidents.

  • All hazardous chemicals at the property must be stored in secure locations.
  • Only trained workers should be allowed to mix chemicals at the property.
  • Stores should train their employees to properly dispose of chemicals and other hazardous materials.

If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. For example, a property owner may have known that hazardous chemicals were stored at a height that made them susceptible to falling and spilling.

Steps to Take After Freeport Hazmat Incidents

Many people are injured every year in accidents involving hazardous chemicals. A lot of the exposure occurs in a workplace environment. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, “workers suffer more than 190,000 illnesses and 50,000 deaths annually related to chemical exposures. Workplace chemical exposures have been linked to cancers, and other lung, kidney, skin, heart, stomach, brain, nerve, and reproductive diseases.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any chemical exposure incidents.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with chemical exposure may not be immediately obvious.
  • The chemicals involved in the incident should also be understood. The way the hospital will treat any chemical exposure incident will vary depending on the source of the contamination.
  • All of the medical records associated with the chemical exposure should be protected and preserved.
  • Any person that is injured due to a chemical exposure incident should contact an experienced personal injury attorney.

Being exposed to noxious chemicals can be very serious. Depending on the chemicals involved and the length of the exposure, it could cause a person to go into respiratory distress. Elderly people and children are particularly vulnerable. Victims of chemical exposure incidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek accountability through a personal injury claim. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
