Many people are killed or seriously injured in car accidents across New York every year. According to the New York State Department of Health, “Motor vehicle traffic crashes are the leading cause of injury related death for New York State residents. During the period from 2012-2014 there was an annual average of 1,098 deaths, 12,093 hospitalizations and 136,913 emergency department visits because of motor vehicle traffic injuries among New York State residents.” Many different factors could contribute to a car accident.
- Speeding
- Distracted driving

- Driver inexperience
All drivers must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. This necessitates that they operate their vehicle at a safe speed at all times. They must be particularly cautious during periods of heavy traffic. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Drivers that flee the scene of an injury collision could also face criminal liability. It is important that certain steps are taken after any collision.
