BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (April 30, 2025) – A 61-year-old pedestrian has tragically died in a Bensonhurst, Brooklyn near the intersection of Bay Parkway and 60th Street.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. A vehicle was traveling south on Bay Parkway when it collided with the victim.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help him. He was transported to Maimonides Medical Center with critical injuries.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. A full investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing.

Liability for Brooklyn Car Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “According to NHTSA data, in 2022 most pedestrian traffic deaths occurred in urban settings (84%), on the open road (76%) versus intersections (24%), and during dark conditions with or without artificial lighting (74%).” Drivers should take several actions in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.

  • Drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.
  • Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.

All drivers must exercise care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians in the road. They must be particularly cautious at night during periods of low visibility. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several parties could potentially be liable for a pedestrian accident.

  • Drivers could be responsible if they acted negligently.
  • The manufacturer of a vehicle could be responsible if a defect with that vehicle contributed to a crash.
  • A city or municipality could be liable for a pedestrian accident if it was caused by a dangerous condition on the roadway.

Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of many different failures. The vast majority of pedestrian accidents can be prevented when drivers simply slow down. Sadly, though, drivers will have to do everything in their power to avoid liability if they’re involved in a fatal collision. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of accountability throughout that claim.
