Fourth Person Died Following Legionella Outbreak At Albany Nursing Home

New Water Treatment System Set To Be Installed At Albany Nursing Home Where Four People Died From Outbreak of Legionella

Fourth Person Died Following Legionella Outbreak At Albany Nursing Home

ALBANY, NEW YORK (September 16, 2024) – Four people have tragically died following an outbreak of Legionella at Peregrine Senior Living at Shaker facility.

County officials are saying that 20 people have been hospitalized after the discovery of Legionella bacteria at the facility. The bacteria are spread through the air when an individual breathes mist that contains the bacteria.

A new water treatment system was installed at the Peregrine Senior Living at Shaker facility. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Illnesses Caused By Legionella Bacteria

Legionella bacteria can cause a serious illness for those that come into contact with it. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. Certain people are at increased risk for this infection, but it’s treatable with antibiotics.” There are a number of signs that someone may have contracted Legionnaires’ disease.

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle aches

Depending on the facts of any case, a nursing home could be liable for any instance where someone is sickened by Legionnaires’ disease. Property owners in New York have a legal responsibility to maintain their properties in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for the protection of everyone on a property whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. There are a number of ways that a nursing home may have failed to protect residents from Legionnaires’ disease.

  • A nursing home may have failed to maintain a water treatment system.
  • A nursing home may have failed to implement a Legionnaires’ disease prevention plan.
  • A nursing home may have failed to implement adequate water disinfection protocols.

Elderly people are among the most at risk for becoming seriously ill from Legionnaires’ disease. This is why it is so important for nursing homes to be proactive when it comes to preventing Legionella outbreaks. Sadly, though, this does not always take place. It is common for nursing homes to cut corners in terms of safety in order to generate greater profits.
