Liability for New York City MTA Bus Accidents
Many people are injured in collisions with MTA buses in New York City each year. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” There are many factors that make buses dangerous.
- Buses have large bright spots that can obscure smaller vehicles.
- Buses have a wide turning radius, which makes them more susceptible to side-impact collisions.
- Buses can weigh 10,000s of pounds and can take long distances to bring to a safe stop.
Buses are considered common carriers. Their drivers must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid hitting other vehicles. Many bus collisions occur when drivers make dangerous left turns in the roadway. If a bus driver turns into the path of another vehicle, this may be construed as negligence. It is important that certain steps are taken after any bus accident.
- The police should be called to the scene.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records should be called.
- A New York bus accident attorney should be contacted.
Bus accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of drivers that violate traffic regulations. Unfortunately, bus companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their drivers are involved in a collision. This is why it is so important that victims seek the guidance of a skilled attorney. An attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
