Commercial trucks can weigh up to 80,000 lbs and pose a number of hazards to other drivers. According to the FMCSA, “Large trucks and buses need the length of up to two football fields to safely stop. Driving too fast for weather or road conditions or failing to slow down for curves or ramps create risks for rollovers, as well as crashes. ” A number of other factors could contribute to a truck accident.
- Truck drivers often work long hours and may naturally become fatigued. The CDC estimates that staying awake for only 18 hours can reduce a person’s ability to drive safely equal to driving with a BAC of 0.05%.
- Commercial trucks have a high utilization rate. If they are not regularly inspected and properly maintained, certain components could fail.
- Commercial trucks have a wide turning radius and are much more likely to be involved in side-impact collisions if truck drivers are not careful.
All truck drivers have a legal obligation to do everything within their power to avoid collisions. This includes scanning the road ahead of them and slowing down for potential hazards. If a truck driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
Truck accidents can be complex events. The factors that contribute to any truck accident can take place many hours, days, or weeks beforehand. Sadly, though, truck companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if one of their drivers is involved in a crash. Any person injured in a truck accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
