Liability For Queens Semi-Truck Accidents
Semi-trucks account for a relatively low number of vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionate number of fatal collisions. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021 and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are several factors that can make semi-trucks particularly dangerous.
- Semi-trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
- Semi-trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs and can take long distances to come to a complete stop.
- Semi-trucks have a large turning radius and are more likely to be involved in side-impact collisions.
All truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Truck drivers should only change lanes if it is safe to do so. If a truck driver leaves their lane of traffic and collides with another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries, including:
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Organ damage
- Internal injuries
Semi-truck accidents tend to be very complex. The factors that may contribute to any collision can take place hours, days, or weeks beforehand. Sadly, though, truck companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility for a collision involving their drivers. This is why it is so important that the evidence left behind after any collision is properly documented.
