Investigation Underway After 74-Year-Old Man Died In Bay Ridge, Brooklyn Car Accident Along Bay Ridge Avenue

Man Killed In Bay Ridge, Brooklyn Car Accident on Ridge Boulevard

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (September 12, 2024) – A 74-year-old man has tragically died in a Bay Ridge, Brooklyn hit-and-run car accident on Bay Ridge Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 8:55 p.m. on Wednesday. A man was crossing Ridge Boulevard in a crosswalk when he was hit by a white SUV.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Sadly, he later died due to the severity of his injuries.

Local residents are saying that the area is known for speeding, reckless driving, and collisions. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Brooklyn Car Accidents

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States. According to the NHTSA, “For more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2022, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities.” Speeding negatively impacts a person’s ability to drive safely in a number of ways.

  • Drivers take longer to stop at higher speeds.
  • Drivers are less able to maintain their vehicle in a single lane of traffic at higher speeds.
  • Drivers are more likely to lose control at higher speeds.

All drivers must take reasonable measures in order to avoid collisions. This includes slowing down in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after a collision.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • The police report should be reviewed.

Pedestrian accidents tend to be highly preventable. Drivers fail to predict where pedestrians will be and how long it may take them to stop. The family of any person that died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
