Man Injured In Manhattan Subway Station Stabbing

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (March 9, 2025) – A man was injured in a stabbing at a lower Manhattan subway station after some type of dispute with a male suspect.

New York City officials are saying that the incident took place around 12:46 AM on Saturday. A male victim was inside the 14th St. Union Square station when he was stabbed in the right eye by another person.

The victim was taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment. An investigation is underway to locate the suspect involved in the attack.

It remains unknown if the attacker and the victim may have known each other.

Liability for New York City Subway Station Attacks

Assaults in New York City subway stations are unfortunately all too common. According to Gothamist, “While major crime on the subway is rare for the MTA’s millions of daily commuters, serious assaults in transit more than tripled between 2009 and last year, from about 150 to 540, according to Vital City’s analysis. Other crimes like robberies and thefts have decreased on the subway, the data shows.” There are a number of factors that may contribute to assaults in subway stations.

  • The crowded conditions of subway stations can create a tense environment for all passengers.
  • A large portion of the assaults in New York City subway stations involve people who have serious mental health issues.
  • Substance abuse is another major contributing factor to violent assaults in the subway.

Depending on the facts of any case, the MTA could be liable for any assault in a New York City subway station. Property owners have a legal obligation to protect people from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm on their property. This includes violent assaults and other criminal behavior. If a property owner fails to take reasonable actions in order to prevent assaults, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of measures that the MTA could take to reduce attacks in subway stations.

  • Assaults can be prevented by an increased police presence at subway stations.
  • Surveillance measures such as cameras can help deter crime or at least make it easier for police to identify and arrest repeat offenders.
  • A dedicated response to mental health issues across the city can help prevent attacks.

Assaults in the MTA subway are often highly preventable. Sadly, though, the MTA will often do everything in its power to deny liability if a passenger is injured. This is why it is so important for victims of subway attacks to seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney. An attorney can examine all the unique facts of any case and let victims know if they may be able to pursue damages in a civil claim.
