Man Critically Injured In Westbury MRI Machine Accident at Nassau Open MRI

61-Year-Old Man Injured in Westbury Accident After Being Sucked Into MRI Machine at Nassau Open MRI

Man Critically Injured In Westbury MRI Machine Accident at Nassau Open MRI

WESTBURY, NEW YORK (July 19, 2025) – A man was seriously injured in Westbury at Nassau Open MRI after he was pulled into an MRI machine.

Long Island officials are saying that the accident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Authorities are saying that the man entered the MRI room while the machine was powered on.

He was apparently wearing some type of large metal chain around his neck. The force of the magnets pulled the victim into the machine and critically injured him in the process.

Authorities suspect he may have suffered some type of medical episode. He was taken to the hospital to receive treatment.

A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Accidents at Medical Facilities

Far too many people are injured in hospitals and medical facilities each year. According to The BMJ, “Medical injuries incurred by patients while in hospital result in longer hospital stays, increased hospital charges, and more than 30,000 deaths each year, a study published this week says (JAMA 2003;290: 1868-74).” Hospitals should take a number of measures to protect patients from harm.

  • Electronic Health Records: Hospitals should use electronic health records to protect patients from medical errors.
  • Staff: Hospitals should be adequately staffed by well-trained professionals.
  • Communication: Hospitals should encourage team-based communication that is clear and effective.

Hospitals and medical facilities have a legal obligation to protect patients from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes protecting them from dangers posed by medical equipment. Certain groups of people, including the elderly and small children, may need extra attention and care. If a medical facility fails to protect a patient from a piece of equipment, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after an injury at a medical facility.

  • Medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any accident at a medical facility. Victims are often left with serious injuries and high medical bills. To make matters worse, the same facilities will do everything in their power to avoid responsibility if someone is injured in their care. This is why it is so important for accident victims to seek the guidance of an experienced New York City personal injury attorney.
