Six pedestrians were injured in Manhattan after a motorist plowed into a group of protestors on December 11, 2020 around 4 p.m. Kathleen Casillo, a 52-year-old from Queens, was driving a 2019 BMW Sedan near the intersection of 39th Street and Third Ave, where a group was marching to support a group of ICE detainees observing a hunger strike at a detention center in Bergen, New Jersey.
According to protestors at the scene, Casillo got into the back of the protest with her car and some protestors became concerned that she was driving too fast. One video seemed to show a small group of protestors gathered around the car as it neared the intersection, with one person leaning over the front of the car. Then Casillo stopped her car at the intersection before accelerating into the area of the protest, where people had been standing in the street. When the car charged into the crowd, it tossed people and a bicycle in the air.
Cassillo has been charged with reckless endangerment. She was released from custody and is due in court on February 22, 2021.
