Woman Killed In Brownsville, Brooklyn School Bus Crash

24-Year-Old Woman Died in Brownsville Collision with School Bus by Blake Avenue and Van Sinderen Avenue

Woman Killed In Brownsville, Brooklyn School Bus Crash

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (February 28, 2025) – A 24-year-old woman has tragically died in a Brownsville, Brooklyn school bus accident near the intersection of Blake Avenue and Van Sinderen Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 1:15 PM on Thursday. A 32-year-old woman was driving a Mercedes-Benz when that vehicle was involved in a collision with a school bus.

A 24-year-old passenger in the Mercedes-Benz was critically injured. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A full investigation into the Brownsville collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Brooklyn School Bus Accidents

School buses are normally very safe for their passengers. But they can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians and those in smaller vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “School bus-related crashes killed 104 people nationwide in 2022, down 3.7% compared to the 108 deaths in 2021, according to National Safety Council (NSC) tabulations of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).” Buses can be particularly dangerous for a number of different reasons.

  • Buses have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of other vehicles.
  • Buses have a high center of gravity that can lead to override collisions.
  • Buses weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles and are much more difficult to bring to a safe stop.

School bus drivers are considered common carriers. They must exercise a great deal of caution in order to avoid collisions. A number of bus accidents involve drivers that are making a dangerous left turn. In fact, left-turn collisions are nearly 10 times more common than right-turn collisions at intersections. When a bus driver fails to take evasive action in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any bus accident.

  • A police report for the incident should be created.
  • Medical records for the incident should be preserved.
  • The actions of a school bus driver leading up to a crash should be understood.

Bus accidents are often highly complex events. The factors that may contribute to any bus accident could take place hours, days, or even weeks in advance. Sadly, though, school districts will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if one of their drivers causes an accident. This is why it is so important that all school bus accidents are thoroughly investigated by an independent party. The family of any person who died in a school bus collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
