Pedestrian Killed In Middletown, Manhattan Bus Accident

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (January 31, 2025) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Midtown, Manhattan bus accident by Wickham Avenue and Fairlawn Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 5:56 a.m. on Monday. A pedestrian was walking when they were struck by a Coach USA commuter bus.

The force of the impact knocked the pedestrian to the ground and left them in the eastbound lanes of Wickham Avenue. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.

The pedestrian was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center and later died at the hospital. A full investigation into the Midtown bus crash remains ongoing.

Liability for Manhattan Bus Accidents

Buses can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians and those in passenger vehicles. According to the Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury.” Bus drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.

  • Bus drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Bus drivers should slow down in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Bus drivers should be well rested before working.

Buses are considered common carriers and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must exercise the utmost care in order to avoid harming their passengers and other people on the roadway. If a bus driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any bus accident.

  • Surveillance footage from nearby traffic cameras should be sought.
  • Medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough investigation should be performed.

The vast majority of bus accidents are completely preventable. They tend to happen when bus drivers are distracted or not following safety regulations. This may include instances where bus drivers fail to check cross traffic before making turns. The family of any person who died in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
