Pedestrian Killed In Long Island Car Accident on Sunrise Highway

Investigation Underway After Female Pedestrian Killed In Long Island Car Accident On Sunrise Highway

Pedestrian Killed In Long Island Car Accident on Sunrise Highway

COPIAGUE, NEW YORK (July 29, 2024) – A woman has tragically died in a Long Island pedestrian accident along Sunrise Highway between New Highway and Court Street.

Long Island officials are saying that the collision took place around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday. A woman was trying to cross the highway when she was hit by a vehicle.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the woman. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A full investigation remains ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time.

Liability For Long Island Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be overlooked. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “In 2021, approximately 7,000 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle crashes, the most in 40 years. During 2009–2016, approximately 47,000 traffic-related hospital admissions occurred annually among pedestrians.” Several different factors could contribute to pedestrian accidents.

  • Drivers are much more likely to lose control of their vehicles at higher speeds.
  • A large portion of pedestrian collisions involve drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Pedestrian collisions are much more likely during the early morning and late evening hours when pedestrians are less visible.

All drivers have a legal obligation to take precautions in order to avoid collisions. Drivers must slow down if they see pedestrians in the roadway. They should also use their horns to alert pedestrians to their presence. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any pedestrian accident. This is particularly true if a driver was working at the time of a collision. In general, employers are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties.
