Pedestrian Died In Crash At Staten Island University Hospital

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (February 21, 2025) – A 64-year-old pedestrian has tragically died in an Ocean Breeze, Staten Island car accident along Mason Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Wednesday morning. A pedestrian was walking on the grounds of Staten Island University Hospital when they were hit by a vehicle.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. They were taken to the emergency department at the hospital.

Despite life-saving measures, they later died due to the severe nature of their injuries. A full investigation into the crash at the Staten Island University Hospital remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Staten Island Car Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed in preventable motor vehicle collisions each year. According to the IIHS, “A total of 7,522 pedestrian deaths occurred in 2022. Pedestrian fatalities account for 18% of all crash fatalities. Although pedestrian deaths in 2022 were approximately the same as in 1975, they have increased 83% since reaching their lowest point in 2009.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a pedestrian collision.

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions
  • Driver fatigue

Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. They must be particularly cautious in parking lots where pedestrians can come from every angle. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
  • A police report should be created.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • An experienced pedestrian accident attorney should be contacted.

Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the results of drivers who are distracted or traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions. In many situations, a pedestrian may appear suddenly from behind a vehicle in a parking lot. This is why it is so important that drivers slow down as much as possible in parking lots and other areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. The family of any pedestrian who died in a collision may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
