Liability for Middle Island DUI Accidents
Drunk driving and intoxication remain leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the NHTSA, “Every day, about 34 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 42 minutes. In 2023, 12,429 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths.” Alcohol can impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely in a variety of different ways.
- Alcohol makes it difficult to stay in one lane.
- Alcohol makes it difficult to focus on more than one task.
- Alcohol makes it more difficult for drivers to regulate their speed.
It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other substances. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that crosses into opposing lanes of traffic while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Any person that is injured due to the negligent actions of an intoxicated driver may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
