Nine Injured In Queens School Bus Accident on Union Turnpike

QUEENS, NEW YORK (February 10, 2024) – Nine students were injured in a Queens school bus accident on the Union Turnpike by Winchester Boulevard.

New York City officials are saying the accident took place around 7:30 AM on Monday. For undetermined reasons, a school bus crashed.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. Nine students were injured, and multiple had to be hospitalized.

A full investigation into the cause of the Queens school bus accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Queens School Bus Accidents

Many people are injured in school bus crashes every year. Most victims were pedestrians and those in passenger vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “From 2013 to 2022, about 71% of the deaths in school bus-related crashes were occupants of vehicles other than the school bus, and 16% were pedestrians. About 5% were school bus passengers, 4% were school bus drivers, and 3% were pedalcyclists.” There are a number of factors that make school buses particularly dangerous.

  • School buses have a high center of gravity, which can make them more susceptible to rollover collisions.
  • School buses have large blind spots, which can obscure the presence of pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
  • School buses can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and take much longer to stop than passenger vehicles.

School bus drivers are considered common carriers. They must operate with an abundance of caution in order to protect the safety of all passengers. If a school bus driver failed to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. School bus accidents are associated with many serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Organ damage
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Even after the physical injuries of a school bus accident have healed, many children are left with psychological injuries that can be long-lasting. These can manifest in recurring nightmares and anxiety. It is important for the parents of children injured in school bus crashes to understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. A school bus accident attorney can examine all the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
