Investigating Staten Island Car Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in collisions every year in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) estimates 9,188 pedestrians died in traffic or non-traffic incidents in 2022. Non-traffic incidents occur on non-traffic ways such as driveways, parking lots, or other private property.” There are a number of steps that drivers should take in order to prevent collisions with pedestrians.

  • Drivers should slow down in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Drivers should use their horns to alert pedestrians of their presence.
  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns at intersections.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting any pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • The history of pedestrian accidents along the road where the collision took place should be understood.
  • Surveillance footage of the accident should be sought.
  • Medical records related to the crash should be preserved.

It can be hard to know where to begin if you’ve been injured in a pedestrian accident. Victims of these collisions often suffer very serious injuries and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
