Four Injured in Inwood, Manhattan Apartment Fire

Victims Transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital After Inwood, Manhattan 2-Alarm Fire

Four Injured in Inwood, Manhattan Apartment Fire

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (June 13, 2024) – At least four people were injured in a two-alarm fire in Inwood, Manhattan at a five-story apartment building at 120 Vermilyea Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the fire started around 4:17 PM on Monday afternoon. More than 100 firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene in order to get the fire under control.

Several people had to be extricated from the building. At least four people were injured in the blaze.

Three of the victims were transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital to receive treatment. An investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.

Liability for New York City Apartment Fires

Residential fires remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death across New York and the United States. According to the New York City Comptroller, “Between 2017 and 2021, there were over 100 fires in New York City residential buildings caused by portable heaters like the one that caused the Twin Parks fire. Over that same period, New Yorkers called 311 nearly one million times to report a lack of heat in their homes.” Apartment owners should take many different measures to protect guests from fires.

  • Apartment owners should ensure that they are abiding by all fire codes. This will include installing smoke detectors in all units.
  • Apartment owners should ensure that all building appliances are routinely inspected and well-maintained.
  • Apartment owners should ensure that all exits and entrances are unobstructed by materials.

All apartment owners in New York must use reasonable care to protect their guests from foreseeable sources of harm. When an apartment owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their property, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim if someone is injured in a fire. Victims of residential fires tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Burn injuries
  • Lung damage
  • Nerve damage
  • Organ damage

The vast majority of residential fires are preventable. Even when fires are not preventable, certain safety measures are critical. In particular, smoke detectors can give people enough time to gather themselves and exit the building. Any person that is injured in an apartment fire may be entitled to damages through a personal injury claim. An attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.
