Jamaica Cement Truck Accident

BRONX, NEW YORK (November 18, 2026) – A 90-year-old woman has tragically died in a Bronx apartment fire at a two-story building on Boston Road and Forest Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the fire started around 8:53 PM on Tuesday. Dozens of firefighters and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene to help the victims.

They were able to rescue a 90-year-old woman who was found inside the building. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors described the woman as very friendly and a loved member of the community. A full investigation into the cause of the blaze remains ongoing.

Liability for Bronx Apartment Fires

Residential fires remain a cause of preventable injury and death all across New York City and the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “During this five-year period, US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 328,590 home structure fires per year. These fires caused an annual average of 2,600 civilian deaths; 10,770 civilian fire injuries; and $8.9 billion in direct property damage.” There are many different causes of apartment fires.

  • Apartment fires may be the result of electrical malfunctions.
  • Apartment fires are often caused by unattended cooking.
  • Apartment fires could be started by lithium-ion batteries.

Depending on the facts of any case, a property owner in New York could be legally responsible if a person dies in an apartment fire.  Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition. When they have active or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their property, they must take action. There are certain steps the property owners should take to protect against apartment fires.

  • Apartments should be equipped with smoke detectors.
  • Apartments should undergo routine maintenance and inspections.
  • Apartments should have unobstructed exits in the event of a fire.

It is important that the circumstances leading up to any fire are properly understood. There could be several liable parties. Even if an apartment owner was not negligent in terms of how a fire started, a lack of adequate safety features or warning systems could create liability. The family of any person who died in an apartment fire may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
