24-Year-Old Man Died In Park Slope, Brooklyn FDNY EMS Collision Near 4th Avenue and Sackett Street

E-Bike Rider Killed In Brooklyn FDNY EMS Vehicle Accident

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (November 26, 2024) – A 24-year-old man riding an e-bicycle has tragically died in a Park Slope, Brooklyn car accident by 4th Avenue and Sackett Street.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday. An FDNY pickup truck was being driven down the road when it collided with the bicyclist.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was taken to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Brooklyn Car Accidents

Emergency vehicles are involved in many serious collisions every year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 224 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. Half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (50%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for another 22%, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 16% and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 8% of the deaths.” There are several factors that may contribute to an accident with an emergency vehicle.

  • Accidents are more likely when emergency vehicles do not have their lights and sirens on.
  • Accidents are more likely to happen at intersections.
  • Accidents are more likely in dense urban areas.

The drivers of emergency vehicles are given a lot of leeway in terms of how they can operate. They can speed, go through red lights, drive on the wrong side of the road, and take many actions that would otherwise be illegal. But they must be responding to an actual emergency with their lights and sirens on. However, even in the midst of an emergency, the operators of emergency vehicles must not show a reckless disregard for the safety of the public. An officer or emergency responder may show a reckless disregard for public safety in many ways.

  • Police officers may have failed to terminate a pursuit after a supervisor ordered it to end.
  • An ambulance driver may have failed to check for cross traffic before heading through an intersection.
  • A fire truck operator may have made dangerous maneuvers that would have been unsafe given the prevailing conditions.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any accident with an emergency vehicle. These accidents can leave victims with devastating injuries. Many of the pedestrians and cyclists who are hit do not survive their injuries. To make matters worse, the emergency responders responsible for these crashes will do everything to deny responsibility. The family of any person who died in an accident with an emergency vehicle may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
