Construction Worker Injured In Scaffold Accident At Bronx Writing Academy

BRONX, NEW YORK (March 24, 2024) – A construction worker was injured in the Bronx after he fell from the Bronx Writing Academy on Morris Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 4:30 PM on Thursday. The worker was on some type of scaffold when he fell.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was taken to a hospital in order to receive treatment, though the extent of his injuries remains unknown.

A full investigation into the scaffold accident at the Bronx Writing Academy remains ongoing.

Liability From Bronx Scaffold Accidents

Many workers are killed or seriously injured in scaffold accidents every year. According to OSHA, “An estimated 2.3 million construction workers, or 65 percent of the construction industry, work on scaffolds frequently. Protecting these workers from scaffold- related accidents would prevent 4,500 injuries and 50 deaths every year, at a saving for American employers of $90 million dollars in workdays not lost.” Construction companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent scaffold accidents.

  • Construction companies should ensure that all of the scaffolds they use are inspected before each shift.
  • Construction companies should ensure that the weight placed upon a scaffold never exceeds its carrying capacity.
  • Construction companies should install guard rails and other safety measures in certain locations to prevent falls.
  • Construction companies should provide their workers with personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) when they are working at heights of 6 feet or higher.

Building owners and general contractors can be held strictly liable for scaffold accidents under New York Labor Law 240. The law applies to all workers who are engaged in the erection, demolition, repairing, altering, painting, cleaning or pointing of a building. It also applies to incidents where a worker falls or is struck by a falling object. Victims of scaffold falls tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Death

Scaffold accidents are nearly always preventable. They tend to involve situations where construction companies or building owners are taking shortcuts. This could include failing to properly inspect the scaffold for structural stability. In many situations, injured workers were not provided with adequate fall protection. It is nearly always workers who pay for these mistakes with their own bodies and lives. Any person who is injured in a scaffolding accident in New York City may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
