MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK (June 20, 2025) – A City of Mount Vernon worker was seriously injured in an accident while trimming trees by 5th Avenue and 5th Street.
Mount Vernon officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:45 AM on Tuesday. The worker was trimming trees when they were injured.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
He was taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment.
Liability for New York Tree-Trimming Accidents
Many people are injured in tree-trimming accidents each year. According to TCI Magazine, “Compared to all industries, tree workers have at least 15 times the fatality rate (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2020a) and three times the nonfatal rate (BLS 2018). You might take some comfort in the nonfatal rate being “only” three times that of all industries, but consider its meaning.” Tree trimmers face a variety of potential hazards.
- Tree trimmers can be seriously injured by their own equipment.
- Tree trimmers can be electrocuted if their power tools come into contact with electrical lines.
- Tree trimmers are at risk of being hit by falling trees or branches.
- Tree trimmers are at risk of falling from their harnesses.
All employers in New York have a legal obligation to maintain worksites in a reasonably safe condition. If a work site is not maintained in a safe condition and this leads to a worker being injured or killed, their employer could potentially face liability for the accident. For example, a company may not have taken sufficient measures to protect against electrical hazards. It is crucial that certain actions are taken after any tree-trimming accident.
- Medical records related to any injuries should be preserved.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- The condition of any equipment involved in the accident should be investigated.
- An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.
The vast majority of workplace accidents are preventable. They often involve major safety violations at worksites. This may include failing to protect workers from fall hazards or electrical hazards. Sadly, employers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility when a worker is injured. This is why it is so important that all workplace accidents are properly investigated by an outside party.
