Liability for Long Island Car Accidents
Car accidents where vehicles drive through storefronts may seem like freak occurrences, but they are actually quite common. According to the Storefront Safety Council, “Our data shows that every year in the United States, vehicles crash into commercial buildings and related structures more than 100 per day. These storefront crash incidents involve collisions with retail stores, offices, bus stops, shopping centers, post offices, restaurants, and more. These incidents result in as many as 16,000 injuries and more than 2,600 fatalities annually.” There are a number of reasons that a driver might go through a storefront.
- Drivers may experience pedal confusion, whereby they mistake the brakes for the gas.
- Drivers may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Drivers may simply fail to stop in time to prevent a collision.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. They must continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards and be particularly cautious in parking lots. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that collides into the entrance of a store. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident.
- A police report should be created.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.
It could be hard to know where to begin if you’re injured in a car accident. Many accident victims may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They could also be left with very high medical bills. It is important that victims understand that they do have legal options. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
