Investigation Underway After Man and 9-Year-Old Child Hit by School Bus in Crown Heights, Brooklyn Near Buffalo Avenue and Eastern Parkway

Man Child Injured In Crown Heights, Brooklyn School Bus Accident

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN (January 25, 2025) – A man and a nine-year-old girl were injured after being hit by a school bus in Crown Heights, Brooklyn near Buffalo Avenue and Eastern Parkway.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:30 AM on January 24. A school bus was heading north and making a left turn when it hit the man and girl.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. Both the man and the child were taken to Maimonides Medical Center in order to receive care.

Two children were on the bus at the time of the collision. Neighbors have complained that the intersection where the accident took place can be dangerous.

It is often congested and many drivers have run through red lights. A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Brooklyn School Bus Accidents

School buses tend to be very safe for their passengers, but they can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians. According to the National Safety Council, “School bus-related crashes killed 104 people nationwide in 2022, down 3.7% compared to the 108 deaths in 2021, according to National Safety Council (NSC) tabulations of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).” There are a number of measures that bus drivers should take in order to avoid collisions.

  • Bus drivers should always check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Bus drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.
  • Bus drivers should maintain their vehicle at a safe speed at all times.

One of the main reasons that buses can be dangerous to pedestrians is that they have large blind spots. Bus drivers are always supposed to make sure that a pedestrian is not potentially crossing in their blind spot. But far too often this does not take place. A high number of pedestrian accidents at intersections involve drivers making left turns. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Amputations
  • Organ damage

Depending on the facts of any case, liability for school bus collisions could extend beyond any driver. The company or municipal entity that the school bus driver worked for could also be held at fault. Generally speaking, employers are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the scope and course of their job duties. Any person injured in a school bus accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
