New Study By The National Institutes of Health Reveals Hair Relaxer Chemicals Associated With Higher Risk of Uterine Cancer
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (July 24, 2024) – A new study by the National Institutes of Health has shown that hair straightening chemicals are associated with higher rates of uterine cancer.
The study looked at 44,497 U.S. women over a period of almost 11 years. Researchers found that women who used hair straightening chemicals more than four times a year were nearly twice as likely to develop uterine cancer.
Black women were particularly at risk. According to the authors, “Although, the study did not find that the relationship between straightener use and uterine cancer incidence was different by race, the adverse health effects may be greater for Black women due to higher prevalence of use.”
The research represents the first epidemiologic study examining the relationship between chemicals straighteners and uterine cancer.
Liability For Injuries Caused By Chemical Hair Straighteners
The research by the National Institutes of Health has prompted a flurry of lawsuits by women who have developed cancer. According to The Guardian, “The study marked a tipping point in the US, building on more than a decade of scientific research in which women’s exposure to chemicals known as endocrine disruptors appeared to correlate with the development of uterine and breast tumours.” As of July 2024, there are an estimated 8,192 hair straightener lawsuits across the United States. There are a number of popular hair straightener brands that women are using.
- L’Oréal Professional
- Matrix
- Schwarzkopf Professional
- Just for Me
- Avlon
Companies that make hair products have a legal obligation to make sure that those products are reasonably safe. They must rigorously test those products and ensure that they comply with all safety standards. If a company fails to warn about the dangers associated with the use of their products, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. It is important that several steps are taken after developing uterine cancer.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Receipts of hair straighteners should be kept.
- An experienced personal injury attorney should be sought.
It can be hard to know where to begin after developing uterine cancer. To make matters worse, the cosmetic companies that develop hair straighteners have made it clear that they will do everything in their power to deny liability if women develop cancer after using their products. This is why it is so important that victims seek legal counsel as early as possible. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
