Liability for Essex County Bus Accidents
Buses can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and can be dangerous even at lower speeds. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Bus drivers should take several actions to avoid collisions.
- Bus drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
- Bus drivers should use their horn when necessary to alert other drivers of their presence.
- Bus drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
Bus drivers must operate with an abundance of caution in order to avoid causing harm to their passengers and other drivers. They must slow down during periods of inclement weather or reduced visibility. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
- Organ damage
It can be hard to know where to begin if you’ve been injured in a bus accident. Victims may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be left with high medical bills. This is why it is so important that bus accident victims consider all of their legal options. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a bus driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
