What Happened
More than a decade ago, the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston Fossil Plant suffered a catastrophic dike failure, releasing millions of cubic yards of toxic coal ash sludge into surrounding communities. Jacobs Engineering was hired to manage the cleanup, bringing in roughly 900 workers to complete the project.
By 2025, records show that over 250 workers developed serious illnesses linked to the cleanup, and at least 20 have died. Investigations revealed Jacobs Engineering failed to provide masks, respirators, or protective clothing, even though coal ash can contain hazardous substances like arsenic and mercury. Shockingly, workers were falsely assured that the coal ash was harmless—even “safe enough to eat.”
When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urged the company to provide safety gear such as Tyvek suits and respiratory protection, Jacobs Engineering and the Tennessee Valley Authority resisted these recommendations. Workers who requested protective equipment after colleagues began falling ill were reportedly fired, highlighting the depth of the negligence.
