Bus Rollover In Chilly Injures 280 People Along Interstate 490 West of Rochester

28 Injured Injured In Chili Bus Accident on Interstate 490

CHILI, NEW YORK (December 28, 2024) – At least 28 people were injured in a Chili rollover bus accident along Interstate 490, according to the New York State Police.

Monroe County officials are saying that the incident took place around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday. The tour bus was traveling down the road when it flipped onto its side.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. At least 28 people were injured, including one person who was critically injured.

The driver of the bus was ejected through the front windshield. They were also ticketed for fatigued driving, speeding, and unsafe lane change.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for New York Bus Accidents

Driving while fatigued is actually incredibly dangerous and comparable to driving while intoxicated. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Being awake for 17 hours is similar to having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05% (the level some countries use for drunk driving violations). Being awake for 24 hours is similar to having a BAC of 0.10% (above the U.S. drunk driving level of 0.08.” There are a number of other factors that could contribute to a bus accident.

  • Buses have a high center of gravity and are more prone to rolling over.
  • Buses have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
  • Buses weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles and are therefore more difficult to stop.

Bus companies are considered common carriers. Their drivers must operate with a great deal of care in order to avoid collisions. They must operate at a safe speed at all times and only change lanes when it is safe to do so. If a bus driver makes an unsafe lane change that causes the bus to rollover, they could be held at fault through a civil claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Depending on the facts of any case, the company that owned or operated a bus could also be held at fault for a bus collision. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Any person injured in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
