Liability For Brooklyn Semi-Truck Accidents

Semi-trucks account for a relatively small portion of the vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities. According to the IIHS, “A total of 4,714 people died in large truck crashes in 2021, a 17 percent increase compared with 2020. Sixteen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 68 percent were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 15 percent were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” Semi-truck drivers should take a number of steps in order to avoid causing accidents.

  • Semi-truck drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
  • Semi-truck drivers should slow down in areas with heavy traffic.
  • Semi-truck drivers should check their blind spots before making turns on the roadway.

All truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Many truck accidents are due to drivers who are speeding. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

The vast majority of car accidents are preventable. There may be multiple factors that contribute to an accident. These could take place hours, days, or even weeks prior to an accident taking place. Any person who is injured in a semi-truck accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
