Woman Killed, Second Woman Seriously Injured in University Heights Apartment Fire Caused by Electrical Malfunction
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This necessitates that they abide by all fire and building codes. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. In particular, several steps should be taken to mitigate the risks posed by fires.
Residential fires remain a major cause of preventable injury. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2024, local fire departments responded to an estimated 1.38 million fires in the United States. These fires caused an estimated 3,920 civilian fire deaths and 11,780 reported civilian fire injuries. The property damage caused by these fires was estimated at $19 billion.” Any person injured in a residential fire may be able to pursue damages through a bodily injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
