MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (February 3, 2026) –  A construction worker has tragically died in a Manhattan construction accident at a construction pit near 12th Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. A construction worker fell nearly 60 feet into a pit at the worksite.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the injured victim. Paramedics performed CPR and other life-saving measures.

A full investigation by OSHA remains ongoing.

Liability for Manhattan Construction Accidents

Falls remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury or death in the construction industry. According to the Bureau of of Labor Statistics, “In 2023, about 1 in 5 (20.8 percent) workplace deaths occurred in the construction industry and 38.5 percent of these deaths were due to falls, slips, and trips. The construction industry accounted for 47.8 percent of all fatal falls, slips, and trips in 2023.” Victims of workplace falls tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

When a worker is injured or killed in a New York construction accident, they or their surviving family members are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. Building owners and general contractors can be liable for gravity-related accidents through the scaffold law. This includes incidents where a worker falls or is hit by a falling object.
