NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK (November 15, 2024) – An elderly woman was injured in a Nassau County dog attack at a home along Newburgh Street.
Nassau County officials are saying that the incident took place on Friday evening. The woman was attacked by a dog under uncertain conditions.
She sustained multiple lacerations and bites all over her body. She was taken to a local hospital in order to receive care.
A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of people are injured in dog attacks every year. Many people are also killed. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “During 2011–2021, a total of 468 deaths from being bitten or struck by a dog occurred (average = 43 deaths per year). The annual number of deaths ranged from 31 (2016) to 81 (2021). During 2011–2016, more deaths occurred among males than among females during most years; however, during 2017–2021, more deaths occurred among females than among males.” There are a number of measures that dog owners should take in order to prevent dog bites.
Dog owners have a legal obligation to prevent their animal from injuring anyone. In New York, a dog owner can be held strictly liable when their dog bites someone if the owner knew about their animal’s vicious propensity. A dog can be considered dangerous if, without justification, it attacks someone and causes physical injury. Victims of dog attacks tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Many of the injuries sustained in a dog attack may not be immediately apparent. A large number of people injured in dog attacks sustained long-term psychological trauma, including PTSD. Sadly, though, dog owners will often do everything in their power to deny liability if their animal injures someone. This is why it is so important that victims of dog attacks seek legal support as early as possible.
