EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY (March 20, 2026) – A 30-year-old woman has tragically died in an East Orange transit bus accident by Freeway Drive East.
East Orange officials are saying that the collision took place around 6:00 AM on Monday. A woman was crossing the street when she was struck by a bus making a right turn onto Freeway Drive East from Evergreen Place.
The victim became trapped underneath the bus. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene. She was transported to University Hospital in Newark to receive care.
Despite life-saving measures at the hospital, she was pronounced dead. Authorities are asking anyone that may have more information to come forward.
Many people are seriously injured every year in bus accidents. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Bus drivers should take several measures to avoid collisions. Several actions should be taken after any bus accident.
If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The company that the bus driver worked for could also be held at fault. In general, employers in New Jersey can be vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees who are working within the course and scope of their job duties. The family of any person who died in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman killed in this East Orange transit bus accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
