Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in collisions with drunk drivers. According to the NHTSA, “Every day, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 45 minutes. In 2020, 11,654 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths — a 14% increase from 2019.” Victims of DUI car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
If a driver fails to slow down and avoid colliding with a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Drivers that hit pedestrians while intoxicated may have criminal liability in addition to civil liability. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident is protected by a number of laws. They’re able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
