MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (July 20, 2025) – Two people have tragically died in a Chinatown, Manhattan, car accident near the intersection of Canal Street and Broadway.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:30 a.m. along the Manhattan Bridge. A blue Chevy Malibu was speeding westbound when it collided with a cyclist and pedestrian sitting on a bench on the sidewalk.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victims. Both were transported to the hospital with critical injuries.
Despite lifesaving measures, both died due to the severe nature of their injuries. A full investigation into the Chinatown collision remains ongoing at this time.
Far too many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year across New York City. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, “Older adults (aged 65 years and older) had the highest pedestrian fatality rate (5.7 per 100,000 population) compared with children aged 0 to 17 years (0.6 per 100,000 population) and adults aged 18 to 64 years (1.7 per 100,000 population).” City officials in NYC have considered various measures to reduce pedestrian accidents.
All drivers in NYC have a duty of care to avoid collisions with pedestrians. Speeding remains one of the leading causes of pedestrian collisions. If a driver fails to reduce their speed to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is essential that certain steps be taken after any pedestrian accident.
The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are completely preventable. Part of the problem is that traffic measures and city infrastructure have not kept pace as NYC continues to grow. Most roadways and intersections are designed for drivers, not the safety of pedestrians crossing them. The family of any pedestrian who dies in a car accident in New York City may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims who died in this Chinatown collision. Any person who may have more information should reach out to the NYPD. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
