Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in car accidents every year. According to the IIHS, “A total of 7,314 pedestrian deaths occurred in 2023. Pedestrian fatalities account for 18% of all crash fatalities. Pedestrian deaths in 2023 have increased 78% since reaching their lowest point in 2009.” Many different factors could contribute to a car accident.
All drivers must use caution to avoid colliding with cyclists and pedestrians in the roadway. This may necessitate that they slow down well below the speed limit. When a driver fails to slow down to avoid a pedestrian, this could be construed as negligence. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian collision.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are simply not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. It is important that accident victims and their families understand that they do have rights. In particular, the family of any pedestrian killed in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the boy killed in this collision. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to authorities. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
