HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK (March 16, 2026) – Two people were killed and 10 people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead.

Long Island police officials are saying that the accident took place around 10:13 PM on March 13. Several vehicles were traveling westbound on the interstate when they were involved in a collision near exit 17 S.

Authorities believe that a Cadillac was traveling westbound when it was involved in a collision with a BMW, an Escalade, and a black Toyota Highlander. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims.

Liability for Long Island Car Accidents

Speed remains the leading cause of car accidents across New York in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2023, killing 11,775, or an average of over 32 people on a typical day. The total number of fatal motor-vehicle crashes attributable to speeding was 10,541.” Several other steps should be taken after any car accident.

  • The police should be called to the scene so that they can investigate.
  • All medical records related to injuries should be sought.
  • Physical evidence associated with the crash should be collected and preserved.
  • Any person injured in the collision should seek the guidance of an experienced car accident attorney.

When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could serve as evidence of negligence. The vast majority of car accidents are preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are speeding or otherwise following a lead vehicle too closely. Any person injured in a car accident may be able to pursue some measure of justice through a civil claim.
