A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Many people are seriously injured or killed in apartment fires across New York City and the United States each year. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2019–2023, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated average of 14,830 reported structure fires in high-rise buildings each year.” There are many different causes of apartment fires.
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. They must abide by all building and fire codes. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their property, they must act. Failing to act to protect residents could form the basis of a negligence claim.
