N.T.S.B Reports Communication Failures Contributed to LaGuardia

Investigation by N.T.S.B. Reveals Communication Failures Preceded Fatal Plane Crash With Fire Truck at LaGuardia Airport

QUEENS, NEW YORK (April 23, 2026) – There were major communication errors prior to the fatal plane crash involving an Air Canada passenger jet and a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport, according to the NYT.

This finding comes after a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board. The accident first took place on March 22, 2026.

An Air Canada jet was approaching the runway and being guided by air traffic control. At the same time, a fire truck was on the same runway that the Air Canada jet was landing.

Both collided on the runway, which resulted in the deaths of two of the pilots. The air traffic control tower reportedly radioed “stop, stop, stop” prior to the accident.

According to the NTSB, only one air traffic controller was managing both airplanes and ground vehicles prior to the crash. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

The attorneys at GLK Law are investigating the circumstances of this crash at LaGuardia Airport.

In addition to this investigation, they are representing families of the victims from the Hudson River helicopter crash in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Liability for Queens Airplane Crashes

Air traffic controllers have a legal obligation to exercise a great deal of care to prevent collisions. This necessitates that they follow all safety guidelines established by the FAA and use clear communication at all times. When air traffic control fails to provide pilots or emergency responders with clear communication, this could easily contribute to a major crash. There are several types of communication errors that may lead to a plane crash.

  • Unclear Instructions: Air traffic controllers may use non-standard language that could be misinterpreted by pilots.
  • Hearback Failures: Air traffic controllers may fail to correct pilots when they hear instructions incorrectly.
  • Frequency Congestion: Air traffic controllers may transmit instructions to multiple pilots at once.
  • Delays: Air traffic controllers may fail to issue instructions in a timely manner.

If air traffic controllers fail to communicate clearly with pilots, emergency vehicles, or other essential personnel, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Air traffic controllers are operated under the federal government through the Federal Aviation Administration. The federal government would ultimately be liable for any plane crash that was caused by negligence on the part of the air traffic control. Depending on the specific facts of any case, there could also be liability on the part of an airline or other entities if a plane collides with a truck or other vehicle.

Steps to Take After Plane Crashes

One of the major issues contributing to miscommunication at air traffic control towers is a lack of staff. According to ABC News, “The FAA has struggled with air traffic controller staffing in recent years. According to a Government Accountability Office report from late last year, the number of controllers declined by about 6% over the past 10 years. At the same time, flights increased by 10% and travel surged after the pandemic.” Several steps should be taken after any plane crash.

  • All medical records for related injuries should be sought.
  • The event data recorder of the airplane involved should be preserved.
  • Any person that may have witnessed the accident should be interviewed.
  • Victims should consider their legal options with New York City airplane accident attorneys.

It can be difficult to know where to begin after any plane crash. These incidents routinely leave victims with catastrophic injuries. To make matters worse, the ATC and airports will virtually never accept responsibility when something goes wrong. Any person injured in a plane crash may be able to pursue damages through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.

We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the families of the two Air Canada pilots killed in this collision. This was a preventable tragedy that should’ve never taken place.
