Man Seriously Injured in Roslyn Heights Collision

Long Island Police Searching for Hit-And-Run Driver Involved in Roslyn Heights Collision by  Mineola Avenue near Woodward Street

ROSLYN HEIGHTS, NEW YORK (August 27, 2026) – A 72-year-old man was seriously injured in a Roslyn Heights hit-and-run car accident by the intersection of Mineola Avenue and Woodward Street.

Nassau County officials are saying that the crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The man was attempting to cross the street when he was hit by a vehicle.

That driver did not stop after the collision and is currently being sought by the police. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the elderly victim.

He was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition. Investigators are asking the public to reach out to them if they have more information.

Liability for Nassau County Car Accidents

New York law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian they encounter. According to New York’s Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” There are many different ways that a driver may fail to exercise due care prior to hitting a pedestrian in the road.

  • A driver may have been traveling at an unsafe speed.
  • A driver may have been intoxicated with drugs or alcohol.
  • A driver may have failed to properly scan the road ahead of them.
  • A driver may have been distracted by looking at their cellphone.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, they could be held legally responsible for the collision. Consider, for example, Farooq v. Uber USA, LLC, 235 A.D.3d 846 (Appellate Division, Second Department 2025). A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle making a left turn as they were crossing a Brooklyn street. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the driver failed to yield the right of way and abide by statutory duties under Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146.
