WEST ISLIP, NEW YORK (August 27, 2026) – A worker at the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip was arrested following accusations that he sexually abused a 15-year-old girl.
Suffolk County prosecutors are saying that the incident allegedly occurred in the behavioral health unit of the hospital. Authorities claim that Trever Lauriano, who worked as a nurse’s aide, inappropriately touched the victim under her clothing.
The girl made a noise following the incident, prompting the defendant to leave the room. He has since been arrested.
A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Sexual abuse in a healthcare setting is unfortunately much more common than many people realize. According to RAINN, “From 2003 to 2013, 1,039 physicians had at least one sexual misconduct-related report filed with the National Practitioner Data Bank. Only 5–10% of victims report sexual abuse by physicians, making it a highly underreported crime.” Hospitals should take a number of measures to protect against sexual abuse.
Hospitals owe a legal duty of care to all of their patients to protect them from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes protecting them from sexual misconduct. If a hospital fails to adequately supervise an employee who goes on to sexually abuse a patient, this could be construed as negligence. Victims are able to seek some measure of accountability and transparency through a civil action.
