RICHLAND, NEW YORK (March 18, 2026)—Several people were injured in a Richland 40-vehicle pileup involving multiple tractor-trailers on Interstate 81.
Oswego County officials are saying that the crash took place around Tuesday afternoon. Multiple tractor-trailer trucks and passenger vehicles collided with one another.
Photos of the accident site showed the roadway covered in snow and slush. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims.
Several people were transported to local area hospitals to receive treatment. A full investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
All drivers in New York have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they maintain a safe speed at all times. According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Even driving the speed limit could be considered negligent during periods of inclement weather. Snow and other hazardous road conditions can dramatically increase the time it takes for a vehicle to be brought to a safe stop. Any person injured in a car accident may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this Richland car accident. Hopefully everyone will be able to make a full recovery. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police.
