Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Accord was arrested on charges of DWI. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Long Island DWI Car Accidents

Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of car accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 39 minutes. In 2022, 13,524 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths.” There are a number of ways that alcohol can impair a person’s ability to drive safely.

  • Drivers are less able to stay in a single lane of traffic while intoxicated.
  • Drivers are less able to stop for vehicles ahead of them while intoxicated.
  • Drivers are less able to track moving objects while intoxicated.

It is illegal for any person to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. According to New York Vehicle Code 1192, “No person shall operate a motor vehicle while the person’s ability to operate such motor vehicle is impaired by the consumption of alcohol.” Victims of DUI accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

What many drivers may not realize is that there are a variety of substances besides alcohol that could potentially impair them. This includes over-the-counter medications and prescriptions. It is important for victims of DWI accidents to understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a civil rights claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the questions that you may have.
