Man, 21, Died in Collision With School Bus Carrying Hicksville School District Middle Schoolers on Old Country Road

HICKSVILLE, NEW YORK (April 11, 2026) – A 20-year-old motorcyclist has tragically died in a Hicksville school bus accident on Old Country Road.

Nassau County officials are saying that the accident occurred on Tuesday morning. A man was driving a 2020 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Old Country Road when he was involved in a collision with the school bus.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the injured man. He was transported to a local area hospital with major injuries.

Sadly, he was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the hospital. A full investigation into the school bus accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Nassau County School Bus Accidents

School buses in New York are considered common carriers and must operate their vehicles with a great deal of care to avoid causing harm. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1141, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.” There are several reasons that school buses can be uniquely dangerous.

  • School buses have a wide turning radius.
  • School buses can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and are much more difficult to stop.
  • School buses have large blind spots that can obscure other vehicles.

If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a motorcyclist, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Liability for a school bus collision could extend to several different entities. This includes the private company or school district responsible for operating the school bus. Generally speaking, employers in New York are liable for accidents caused by employees who are working within the course and scope of their job duties.
