Man, 63, Died After Being Hit by Amazon Delivery Vehicle in Cortland
CORTLAND, NEW YORK (April 11, 2026) – A 63-year-old man has tragically died in an Amazon car accident by Main Street at Court Street.
Portland County officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:30 PM on Tuesday. A man was crossing in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by an Amazon subcontractor traveling in a minivan.
The driver of the Amazon vehicle was making a left turn at the time of the collision. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the injured victim.
Sadly, that person died due to the severe nature of their injuries.
Drivers in New York have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid pedestrians in the roadway. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
If an Amazon driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could be considered negligence. That driver could be held directly responsible for the crash. Moreover, liability for the collision could extend beyond any driver determined to be at fault. The company or subcontractor that a driver was working for could also be vicariously liable for the collision. The family of any person who died in a car accident may be able to pursue damages through a negligence claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. This was a preventable tragedy that should not have taken place.
